Environmental issues in the cruise industry
On the initiative of Innovation Norway, Horwath Consulting has written a memo on the most important environmental aspects to be considered in the further developement of the cruise industry in Norway.

Environmental issues in the cruise business

Brief history
Cruise has long traditions in Oslo. In 1929 Oslo had 22 calls of cruise vessels to the city, in 2006 156 vessels with 206 233 passengers called in Oslo. There has been a considerable growth the last years. Oslo has almost five times as many passengers as in 1993 and an increase of 11% from 2005 to 2006.

Cruises to Oslo can be divided in two main groups:

  • Baltic cruises (66% of passengers in Oslo), where Oslo is the only norwegian port and St. Petersburg is the main destination
  • Norwegian cruises (34% of passengers in Oslo), with visits to Bergen, the fjords and sometimes North Cape

In 2007 Oslo had cruise tourists from 133 different nations. Passengers from USA, Britain and Germany acount for almost 65%. Italy and Spain are also important.

In May 2008 RCCL will again use Oslo as a turn-around port for Jewel of the Seas on six short cruises in the nordic waters. MSC will also call in Oslo for turn around in April.

In December 2007 Oslo had four Christmas cruises - a new niche for cruise lines who deploy ships in north-European waters during the winter period. Already two Christmas calls have been booked for December 2008 in Oslo.

Oslo and the Oslofjord
The capital of Norway is situated in the inner end of the about 100 km. long Oslofjord. The fjord and surrounding forested hills make a magnificent scenery. For further information, click here.

Product manual for Oslo
In cooperation with Cruise Baltic, Oslo has - as all the other ports in the Baltic Cruise Project - published a product manual presenting the cruise facilities in each port. Here you will find technical and commercial information on the port and the city together with other useful information.

Cruise impact studies for Oslo
The cruise industry in Europe is booming. The annual growth in passengers is expected to continue with an annual rate of 8-10 percent. Norway is one of Europe's largest cruise destinations. Along Norway's long and indented coastline about 35 harbours received cruise vessels last year. Cruise ships made last year around 1550 calls with ca. 370.000 passengers to Norway. Ten ports in Norway had more than 50 calls in 2006.

On the initiative of Oslo Cruise Network the Municipality of Oslo conducted a survey on the impact of the cruise tourism to Oslo last summer. This will help us increase our knowledge about our guests' visits to Oslo, and to develope the city to become an even more attractive cruise venue for passengers, crew and vessels.

The study was intended to be more than just an economic analysis. It would also gauge satisfaction levels among cruise passengers visiting Oslo. Further, the study would cover strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to Oslo as a cruise destination for future growth.

There was a need for more detailed data on cruise ship visits such as:

  • cruise passengers', crews' and ships' purchases of services and goods
  • other effects
  • a review of present quay capacity and estimates of new quays needed to utilise future cruise potentials
  • a survey of Oslo's situation in regard to pilotage and other Norwegian Coastal Administration fees charged for sailing the Oslo Fjord
  • marked and pasenger information as a basis for marketing and product developement strategies

Cruise to Oslo 2007

Oslo had 138 calls of port with 197.173 passengers from 133 nations in 2007. This was a slight decrease from 2006 (- 4,4 % pax, - 11,5 % calls ). The share of Baltic/Norwegian cruises by calls is 62%/38%, by passengers 66%/34 %. Average number of passengers per ship in Oslo i 2007 was 1.429.

•From USA: 48.344(- 11,2%) = 24,5%
•From GB: 44.055(-2,3%)= 22,3%
From Germany: 27.694(-29%)= 14%

We are expecting 150 calls in 2008.
